Early in the strategic planning process, the team can easily focus on short term tactics because that is what most of the team members do day to day. The team leader needs to set the stage to get the team to think strategically and avoid being too tactical. These executives suggested:
Use a facilitator tasked to get the team to think strategically
Tell the team the tactical discussions will happen at the budget meetings
Have the team discuss what is the long term and when should we shift to short term tactics
Record items to be discussed later and put them in the "parking lot," usually a PostIt note on a flip chart
